On the Sunday before Palm Sunday, the image of El Señor de la Columna makes its way in procession from Atotonilco to the Templo of San Juan de Dios. The procession begins in Atotonilco at midnight and arrives in San Miguel around 7:00am. Fireworks, a brass band, and a children's chorus accompany the solemn yet joyful procession along the lovingly and elaborately decorated Calle Independencia to San Juan de Dios Church.
The original arrival of the statue in San Miguel was over one hundred years ago. In 1823, the people brought the image to San Miguel from Atotonilco, hoping that the Lord would deliver the village from a raging plague.
The statue remains in San Juan de Dios church until the Wednesday after Easter when another solemn procession returns it to Atotonilco.
