Route of Camino Real de Tierra Adentro

The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was part of the Spanish Royal Route from Mexico City to Santa Fe, New  Mexico. Silver was the motive for the development of the road. Along the road, towns, forts, haciendas, and churches were established for the workers. Mines, roads, and bridges were constructed. Along the way were beautiful buildings that reflected a fusion of Spanish and local decoration as well as haciendas that supported an agricultural revolution.

In the state of Guanajuato, there are six points designated by UNESCO as part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro World Heritage Site. One of these points is the historic center of Guanajuato and its adjacent mines and two others are San Miguel de Allende and the Santuario de Atontonilco. The old Hospital Real de San Rafael, on the west bank of the historic center of San Miguel and next to our church, is another point.
